Smiths Aerospace Chooses Altair® HyperWorks® Engineering Framework to Streamline Its Product Design Process

Advanced CAE technology reduces time and costs for aircraft system structural analysis. TROY, Mich., (July 25, 2006) - Altair Engineering, Inc., a leading global provider of technology and services that strengthen client innovation and decision-making, announced today that Smiths Aerospace, UK, a leading transatlantic aerospace systems and equipment company, has selected the Altair® HyperWorks® CAE technology suite to support the development and structural analysis of their aircraft landing systems and components. Smiths selected HyperWorks to improve their engineering department’s finite element modeling and visualization efficiency with Altair HyperMesh and plans to incorporate other HyperWorks tools, including HyperMorph® and OptiStruct® for interactive model morphing and structural optimization.

"I realized that some of our pre- and post-processing limitations and unproductiveness were very similar to those I faced in prior roles," said Paul Fannon, chief stress engineer for Smiths Aerospace. "Having familiarity with HyperMesh and its ability to handle these problems, we benchmarked our incumbent solution to HyperMesh, which clearly showed HyperMesh to be the ideal tool to meet Smiths’ needs. Another decisive factor in choosing HyperMesh was the fact that it will pay for itself in just five years because of the time it saves our engineers."

Altair HyperMesh is a user-friendly, high-performance finite element pre- and post-processor for popular finite element solvers. It allows engineers to analyze product design performance in a highly interactive and visual environment. HyperMorph is a mesh manipulation tool that allows users to quickly parameterize models and stretch finite element meshes while keeping mesh distortion at a minimum.

"We are very pleased that Smiths Aerospace has chosen the HyperWorks suite to streamline and improve their product design process," said Royston Jones, Ph.D., managing director of Altair Engineering, UK. "The Smiths Aerospace story is increasingly common. As companies strive to be more productive and to bring robust, well-designed products to market faster, they must integrate the most advanced CAE technology into their development process. The HyperWorks suite provides superior value and performance to manufacturers of highly engineered products, and we’re delighted to have the opportunity to work with Smiths Aerospace, a recognized leader in the aerospace community."
